Certificate in General English (CGE)
Entry requirements
Entry is open to any new migrant who is keen to learn English. Applicants must be 16 years of age or over and must complete an English language placement test or evidence of their level of English e.g. IELTS score.
Outcome statement
On completion of the course, graduates will have gained general English language skills to survive comfortably in New Zealand and to access vocational training courses.
Content
Beginner to Upper Intermediate General English with provision at Intermediate level to focus either on practical survival English or IELTS General English.
Pathway
The English courses prepare you for entry into certificate, diploma and undergraduate programmes in subjects of your interest, such as Horticulture, Computing, Business, Early Childhood Education which are all offered at ICA. Upon successful completion of the English courses, you can also consider to choose a programme offered by other institutions.

1. STAGES:
Stage 1: Beginner/Elementary
• 12 weeks
• 2 levels:
• Beginner: Modules 1 – 6 (6 weeks)
• Elementary: Modules 7 – 12 (6 weeks)
Stage 2: Upper Elementary
• 12 weeks
• 12 modules
Stage 3: Pre-Intermediate
• 12 weeks
• 12 modules
Stage 4: Intermediate 1
• 12 weeks

2. DURATION
• Course length: 72 weeks (2 years)
• Six levels: 12 weeks per level
• Teaching hours per level:
- Daily: 4 hours
- Weekly: 20 hours
- Monthly (4 weeks) 80 hours
- Term (12 weeks) 240 hours
3. ASSESSMENTS
• Competency-based assessments
• Monthly assessments (after every 4 modules)
• Three assessments per level
