Chinatown coming to New Lynn

It's just an idea at the moment but it has got people talking at the Waitakere city Council.

City Mayor Mr. Bob Harvey is pushing forward for this idea as he thinks it will be great for our city. The area has the highest percentage of Chinese people per head of population of any town centre in New Zealand.

"Chinatowns"are a huge draw card for all cities over the world.

These cultural towns become a hub, not only for the local Chinese but for tourists and local New Zealander's as a way of mixing, embracing and sharing the cultures.

Job Placement Interviews

On Friday 31st August ICA and NZHito took 31 students through a one on one interview to see where each individual student would be best placed for their on going training and study.

During this interview, a series of question were asked and recorded. This enabled the interviewer to get a first hand impression of the student’s English level and what area of New Zealand they wanted to work. We were also able to find out about previous experience and knowledge and what kind of field they might be leaning towards. Some students who were under 22yrs old will be offered the opportunity to do an apprenticeship.

Framework Agreement between ICA and FAAS

In order to enhance the traditional friendship between China and New Zealand and contribute to the education of agricultural technology of both countries, upon friendly discussion and consultation, International College of Auckland (ICA) and Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FAAS) have decided to collaboratively develop modern agricultural training programmes and reached a framework agreement in Fuzhou, China in 19 July 2007.

According to the framework agreement, based on the principle of “sincerity, equality, mutual benefit, and mutual preference”, FAAS shall promote ICA’s accredited qualification education and vocational training programmes in Fujian and neighbouring provinces. In the past few months, ICA Career Services Centre has been busy finding and arranging jobs for the first 2 cohorts of National Certificate in Horticulture students. Thanks to the high profile of the course and the practical skills our students have obtained, the job search performance of the centre has been very successful. Some employers made immediate decision to employ our students after initial interviews with the students. Many have expressed their demand for more ICA graduates.

International College of Auckland PhD Scholarship in Plant Sciences

On 20 February 2007, International College of Auckland signed an agreement with the University of Auckland to set up the International College of Auckland PhD Scholarship in Plant Sciences in University of Auckland. International College of Auckland has donated $60,000 to the University of Auckland Foundation to fund the Scholarship. Course Structure

Duration: 2 years of 34 weeks per year.
There are two semesters of 17 weeks in duration with a five-week break in the middle.

Better Practical Training Facility

ICA has established a new greenhouse at the practical site. It is a wonderful resource, and encourages students to better understand horticultural skills.

ICA has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with West Lynn Gardens in Parker Ave, New Lynn. It’s only 5 minutes drive to ICA. Students are encouraged to use the facilities available. The MOU will enhance the interaction between ICA and the local community. It also creates flexibility as a practical venue.

MP Visits ICA

Recently, the MP for New Lynn, the Hon. David Cunliffe paid a working visit to International College of Auckland (ICA). During his visit, David Cunliffe listened carefully to ICA executives and answered various questions raised by ICA students. The minister delivered a lecture on Government Policy which is part of ICA's teaching syllabus.
